Pathological et pathetic
Bien que tous deux ne soient pas très loin du sens
français, pathological
et pathetic
sont d'un
emploi beaucoup plus fréquent que dans la langue de
Molière. Dans
Génération 90, il y a cet
échange de répliques:
Lelaina: I'm a pathological optimist.
Tron: You're pathological.
En revanche, pathetic s'utilise pour qualifier une situation
minable ou tout simplement dure à vivre. Dans
Deux Garçons, une Fille, trois
Possibilités, Eddy raconte en voix-off ses impressions
sur le film Jule & Jim:
In the morning I went to my film class as usual. Pathetically enough
they showed an old French film about two men and a woman in a love
triangle. Both the men loved the same woman and it slowly made her go
insane. In the end she killed herself with one of the men by driving
a car off a bridge. I understood the moral of the story: two is
company, three is pathetic .
Il s'agit en réalité d'un jeu de mot puisque l'expression
est normalement Two is company, three is a crowd qui signifie
qu'autant tout peut bien se passer à deux, autant les relations
peuvent dégénerer à trois et on est
déjà trop nombreux.
